Blast from the past
Film posters have been a cornerstone of cinema since its inception, serving as eye-catching introductions to films. Our collection includes a remarkable array of original Indian movie posters from the early 1940s. Tasked with capturing attention, telling a story, showcasing stars, and filling seats, posters distill the essence of a feature film into a single, striking image. Despite evolving eras and technologies, modern film posters continue this tradition, using ephemeral paper and ink to forge connections between films and their audiences.

FEATURED EXHIBIT
This month, we feature Indian deity, Goddess Laxmi, originally painted by Raja Ravi Varma in the late 1890s. Laxmi, is the Hindu goddess of wealth, good fortune, beauty, and abundance. The wife of Vishnu, she is said to have taken different forms in order to be with him in each of his incarnations. She is widely worshipped across India.
To make the artwork accessible to a wider audience, the Ravi Varma Press produced lithographs of the original painting. These lithographs were later repurposed by companies to advertise their products. Below, you can view the original lithograph alongside a few advertisement posters it inspired.
