More Info
Achanak (1973) is a Hindi crime drama directed by Gulzar and produced by Romu Sippy, Raj Sippy & Hrishikesh Mukherjee. Inspired by the infamous K.M. Nanavati vs. State of Maharashtra case, the film presents a gripping tale of love, betrayal, crime, and justice. Vinod Khanna stars in the lead role, supported by Lily Chakravarty, Om Shivpuri, Asrani, Farida Jalal, and Iftekhar.
The story revolves around Major Ranjeet Khanna (Vinod Khanna), a devoted army officer who adores his wife Pushpa (Lily Chakravarty). His world comes crashing down when he discovers her affair with his best friend. Consumed by rage and heartbreak, he kills them both and surrenders to the police. As he undergoes trial and imprisonment, the film explores themes of guilt, redemption, and justice, raising moral dilemmas about crime and punishment.
Breaking away from the usual Bollywood formula, Achanak features no songs, relying instead on Vasant Desai’s evocative background score to enhance the emotional intensity. Shot in just 28 days, the film was widely acclaimed for its realistic storytelling and Vinod Khanna’s compelling performance, making it a thought-provoking classic.
