Georges Mathieu (1921–2012) was a French abstract painter, art theorist, and a member of the Académie des Beaux-Arts in Paris. Widely regarded as one of the pioneers of European lyrical abstraction, a movement within informalism. Between 1966 and 1967, he created a series of posters for Air France’s advertising campaign. These works, inspired by major global destinations such as New York, Brazil, Japan, Germany, and India, showcased lyrical abstraction and were praised for their visual coherence in capturing the essence of each country.
