This poster created by V.V. Shetye depicts two tigers lounging on sofas beside a fireplace, enjoying cigars and drinks. Above the fireplace, a mounted head of a person wearing a turban and mustache adds a touch of humor, reminiscent of the iconic Air India Maharaja mascot. The vintage poster evokes a sense of luxury and adventure, positioning India as a premier destination for tiger hunting.
The Air India Maharaja campaign was designed to differentiate the airline from its competitors, introducing the jovial and rotund Maharaja in the mid-1940s. Conceived by SK (Bobby) Kooka, Air India's then Commercial Director, and sketched by Umesh Rao, an artist at J. Walter Thompson in Bombay, the Maharaja quickly became a central figure in the airline’s marketing. Over the years, he was creatively used to promote new flight routes and highlight Air India's services with humor, charm, and clever puns. This unique approach helped Air India stand out, making the Maharaja an iconic and enduring symbol of the airline.
