Apna Desh (1949) is a Hindi social drama directed by V. Shantaram and produced under the Rajkamal Kalamandir banner. The film stars Pushpa Hans as Mohini Devi, with Umesh Sharma, Chandrashekhar, and Manmohan Krishna in key roles.
The story is set against the backdrop of the Partition of India and follows Mohini, a Hindu Punjabi girl who is abducted during the communal riots. After escaping to India, she is rejected by her family and society. Disillusioned and bitter, Mohini turns to smuggling and black-marketing, hiding arms in crates of musical instruments that are sent to Pakistan. She crosses paths with Satish, a fellow refugee who becomes involved in her operations. In the end, guilt drives Mohini to confess her crimes and surrender to the authorities.
The film’s music was composed by S. Purushottam, with lyrics by Diwan Sharar and Mirza Ghalib. Apna Desh highlights the emotional and social toll of Partition, especially on women, and critiques societal hypocrisy.
