Buddha (1961) is a Japanese drama film directed by Kenji Misumi, depicting the life of Prince Siddhartha Gautama, who later became Gautama Buddha. Starring Kojiro Hongo as Siddhartha and Machiko Kyō in a key role, the film explores his spiritual awakening.
Despite his sheltered royal life, Siddhartha is deeply disturbed after witnessing the realities of aging, sickness, and death outside the palace. Realizing the impermanence of life, he renounces his luxuries and embarks on a quest for enlightenment, seeking to understand human suffering and attain inner peace.
Produced by Masaichi Nagata, with a screenplay by Dai Nishijima and music by Sei Ikeno, Buddha was released on November 1, 1961, by Daiei Film. It remains a significant cinematic work, offering a compelling portrayal of one of history’s most revered spiritual figures.
