The Burmah Oil Company, founded in 1886 in Scotland, was a pioneer in South Asia’s oil industry. In India, the company played a key role in establishing a wide distribution network. In the 1920s, Burmah Oil partnered with Royal Dutch Shell to form Burmah-Shell Oil Storage and Distributing Company of India Limited, which focused on importing, storing, and distributing petroleum products across the country. This joint venture set up extensive facilities, including pipelines, storage tanks, and service stations, and initially transported oil in bulk via 4-gallon and 1-gallon tins throughout India.
