Caltex (California Texas Oil Company) was launched in the U.S. in 1936 and entered India the same year, beginning operations in Bombay. A notable landmark was the Karfule petrol pump, opened on 3rd October 1938 in Ballard Estate. Designed by G.B. Mhatre in the Art Deco style, it originally served Caltex fuel and has been operated by Hindustan Petroleum since 1978, remaining a well-preserved heritage site. Caltex also registered the "Key Caltex" trademark for kerosene in India on 13th January 1943, officially published in March 1945.
