This calendar, printed by Norbury Natzio and Co. Ltd. for Horlicks, features a depiction of "Vidushaka," a scene from the historical Mauryan Empire. It illustrates an ancient feminine rite known as Dohada, where a woman kicks an Ashoka tree to encourage its flowering—a practice even depicted in temple sculptures. The image suggests that the woman’s foot, the tree, and the serpent represent elements as old as Bharata itself, symbolizing a fortunate omen for future plans.
Horlicks was created in 1873 by British-born brothers William and James Horlick in the United States. It was introduced to India by British soldiers during World War I in 1918 as a dietary supplement. By the 1930s and 1940s, Horlicks had become a popular family drink in India.
