Jagte Raho (1956) is a Hindi social drama directed by Amit Maitra and Sombhu Mitra, starring and produced by Raj Kapoor. The film follows a poor villager who arrives in the city at night in search of work and a better life, but is mistaken for a thief. While trying to escape the angry residents, he hides and moves through various buildings, witnessing the hidden corruption, greed, and moral decay behind the respectable façades of urban society. With minimal dialogue and expressive storytelling, the film highlights the loneliness and alienation of the common man in an uncaring city.
In the end, a compassionate woman—played by Nargis in a brief cameo—offers the man a glass of water, symbolizing hope and humanity. The film features the haunting song "Zindagi Khwab Hai" and won the Crystal Globe at the 1957 Karlovy Vary International Film Festival. Jagte Raho remains a powerful social commentary and a classic of Indian cinema.
