Koshish (1972) is a Hindi-language romantic drama directed by Gulzar, starring Sanjeev Kumar and Jaya Bhaduri. The film tells the story of Hari (Sanjeev Kumar) and Aarti (Jaya Bhaduri), a deaf and mute couple who navigate life together. After a tragic accident causes the death of their first child, they find hope with the birth of their son, Amit, who has the ability to hear and speak.
The couple faces societal challenges and personal hardships, but their love and determination to provide a better life for Amit remain central themes. The film also explores generational differences as Amit, now grown, hesitates to marry a deaf-mute girl chosen by his grandfather, highlighting society's evolving perceptions of disability.
Koshish is praised for its sensitive portrayal of disability, presenting it as a natural part of life. The film won two National Film Awards, including Best Screenplay for Gulzar and Best Actor for Sanjeev Kumar, and received several nominations at the Filmfare Awards. The music, composed by Madan Mohan, features soulful songs like "Soja Baba Mere Soja" by Mohammed Rafi, adding emotional depth to the story.
