More Info

The Lithograph by Joglekar, portrays a moving scene from the Bhagavata Purana, depicting the moment when Lord Krishna and Balarama journey with Akrura to Mathura to liberate their imprisoned parents, Devaki and Vasudeva. Central to the composition is an elaborately decorated chariot driven by Akrura, adorned in rich hues of red and gold, crowned with a domed canopy and a fluttering flag—symbols of divine mission and impending victory. Surrounding the chariot, the Gopis desperately try to prevent Krishna's departure, their gestures filled with sorrow and yearning. Some cling to the wheels, while others plead and lament, embodying the anguish of impending separation. In the foreground, a poignant scene shows one Gopi seated under a tree, gently comforting another, evoking the profound emotional bond between them and Krishna. The backdrop of lush foliage and playful monkeys adds a layer of pastoral tranquility, enhancing the contrast between the serene setting and the heart-wrenching farewell.
