Raja Ravi Varma (1848–1906) was a celebrated Indian painter known for blending European academic art techniques with Indian subjects, making classical Indian art accessible to the masses. Born into an aristocratic family in Kerala, Varma mastered oil painting and is renowned for his depictions of scenes from Indian epics like the Mahabharata and Ramayana. He often portrayed Indian gods, goddesses, and historical figures with lifelike realism, drawing inspiration from traditional Indian aesthetics and the techniques of Western realism. His works not only influenced Indian art but also popularized mythological characters across the country, partly due to his pioneering efforts in lithography, which made his paintings widely available as prints.

The lithograph "Laxmi" by Raja Ravi Varma portrays the Goddess of wealth and prosperity standing gracefully on a blooming pink lotus. She holds a lotus in each hand, while her other hands are positioned in Varada Mudra (gesture of blessing) and Abhaya Mudra (gesture of protection). She is flanked by an elephant holding a garland in its trunk, symbolizing royal power and auspiciousness. In the serene backdrop, lotus flowers and swans float gracefully in a tranquil lake, enhancing the divine setting.

Goddess Laxmi, the consort of Lord Vishnu, embodies beauty, compassion, peace, and righteousness. She emerged from the Milky Ocean during its churning by the Devas and Asuras, signifying divine fortune. In Vaikuntha, she serves alongside Vishnu, representing the splendor and prosperity of the celestial realms.
