More Info

Nagin (1954) is a Hindi-language romantic drama directed by Nandlal Jaswantlal and produced by Sashadhar Mukherjee under Filmistan. The film stars Vyjayanthimala as Mala and Pradeep Kumar as Sanatan, set against a backdrop of rivalry between two Adivasi (tribal) communities—the Nagi and the Ragi. Mala, the daughter of the Nagi chief, vows revenge against Sanatan but ends up falling in love with him after being captivated by his flute playing. Their romance unfolds amid tribal tension, exploring themes of love, revenge, and reconciliation.

The film’s music, composed by Hemant Kumar with lyrics by Rajendra Krishan, was a major success. The iconic song “Man Dole Mera Tan Dole,” sung by Lata Mangeshkar, became a classic, especially noted for its unique ‘been’ sound created by Kalyanji and Ravi. Nagin was the highest-grossing film of 1954 and helped cement Vyjayanthimala’s place in Hindi cinema.
