More Info
This poster by H. Watlington features a black-and-white illustration of a man riding in a bullock cart. The man sits cross-legged, appearing to hold reins attached to the two bulls pulling the cart. The cart is heavily loaded and covered with a cloth. The background is plain, with the focus entirely on the cart. The detailed drawing has a vintage feel.
P&O, short for the Peninsular and Oriental Steam Company, was founded in 1835 in London by ship brokers Brodie McGhie Willcox, Arthur Anderson, and Captain Richard Bourne. In 1842, they incorporated Indian mail services for the East India Company under the name Hindostan, followed by services to Alexandria in 1844. In 1954, the Bombay Mail Service was transferred from the East India Company to P&O. This service provided mail, cargo, and passenger transport between Europe, Egypt, India, Ceylon, Malaysia, China, and Australia. In 2006, the British shipping company was acquired by DP World for £3.3 billion.
