Palki (1967) is a Hindi romantic drama directed by Mahesh Kaul and S.U. Sunny, and produced under the Eros International banner. The film stars Rajendra Kumar as Naseem, Waheeda Rehman as Shama, with Rehman and Johnny Walker in pivotal roles. It holds special significance as one of the final works of music director Ghulam Mohammed, whose compositions were completed posthumously by Naushad, with lyrics written by Shakeel Badayuni. The story centers on Naseem, a sensitive poet, and his deep love for Shama. However, their bond is challenged by societal expectations, emotional misunderstandings, and personal sacrifices that lead to heartbreak and longing. The film explores themes of love, honor, and fate with emotional intensity. Its music became one of its most memorable aspects, featuring timeless songs like "Jab Jab Bahar Aayi Aur Phool Muskaraye" by Mohammed Rafi, "Aaj Ki Raat Mere Dil Ki Salami Le Le" by Lata Mangeshkar, "Kahan Chal Diye Idhar To Aao" (duet by Rafi and Lata), "Palki Mein Hoke Sawar Chali Re" by Lata Mangeshkar, and "Dilkashi Teri Chal Gayi Re" by Mohammed Rafi. With poetic storytelling, soulful music, and strong performances—particularly by Waheeda Rehman—Palki remains a touching portrayal of love and sacrifice in classic Hindi cinema.
