This lithograph, titled Panj Pyare and published by Hemchander Bhargava, beautifully depicts Shri Guru Gobind Singh Ji seated on a majestic throne, exuding grace and authority. A devoted attendant stands behind him, respectfully waving a chaur (whisk fan), a symbol of reverence. The scene captures the historic moment of the Amrit Sanchar (the sacred Sikh initiation ceremony), which Guru Gobind Singh Ji established to form the Khalsa in 1699.
In front of him stand the Panj Pyare (the Beloved Five)—Bhai Daya Singh, Bhai Dharam Singh, Bhai Himmat Singh, Bhai Mohkam Singh, and Bhai Sahib Singh—who were the first to accept the initiation and embody the spirit of sacrifice and devotion. Mata Sahib Kaur, regarded as the spiritual mother of the Khalsa, is seen humbly receiving Amrit from Guru Gobind Singh Ji, symbolizing her integral role in Sikh history.
The composition reflects the profound significance of this moment, marking the birth of the Khalsa.
