Prem Nagar (1974) is a Bollywood romantic drama directed by K.S. Prakash Rao, starring Rajesh Khanna, Hema Malini, Prem Chopra, Aruna Irani, and Asrani. A remake of the Telugu film of the same name, it explores themes of love, class differences, and redemption.
The story follows Karan (Rajesh Khanna), a wealthy but reckless prince who indulges in a lavish lifestyle. His life takes a turn when he meets Lata (Hema Malini), a humble and kind-hearted air hostess. Impressed by her honesty, Karan hires her as his secretary, and over time, they fall in love. However, their relationship faces opposition due to their class differences. Karan’s troubled past and his manipulative brother, Shamsher (Prem Chopra), create misunderstandings that drive the lovers apart. As Karan spirals into self-destruction, the story takes an emotional and tragic turn.
The film’s music, composed by S.D. Burman, with lyrics by Anand Bakshi, features several hit songs, including "Yeh Lal Rang Kab Mujhe Chhodega", "Phool Aahista Phenko", and "Prem Nagar Mein Basaoonga Ghar Main", all beautifully sung by Kishore Kumar and Lata Mangeshkar.
