Pugree (1948) is a Hindi comedy-drama directed by Anant Thakur in his directorial debut and produced by P. N. Arora. The film stars Amar, Kamini Kaushal, Shashikala, Gope, Pratima Devi, and Ram Avtar. It is an adaptation of the 1947 Hollywood film It Happened on Fifth Avenue and was later remade in 1972 as Dil Daulat Duniya, starring Rajesh Khanna and Sadhana.
The story follows a homeless man who secretly takes shelter in a wealthy family's mansion while they are away. As he settles into the lavish house, he invites other homeless individuals, turning it into a refuge. However, when the mansion's real owners return, they disguise themselves as ordinary people to understand the struggles of the less fortunate. Through humorous and heartfelt moments, Pugree highlights themes of kindness, social disparity, and the importance of compassion. The film's engaging narrative, combined with light-hearted comedy and strong performances, made it a memorable classic of its time.
