This lithograph, titled Shahidi Darshan and published by Hemchander Bhargava, depicts significant moments of martyrdom in Sikh history, honoring the sacrifices made to uphold righteousness, justice, and religious freedom.
It portrays the martyrdom of Guru Arjan Dev Ji in 1606, who was tortured and executed under the orders of Mughal Emperor Jahangir for refusing to renounce his faith and for compiling the Adi Granth, the holy scripture of Sikhism. Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji’s martyrdom in 1675 is also depicted, showing his execution by Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb for defending the religious rights of Hindus against forced conversions to Islam.
The artwork further highlights the tragic sacrifice of Guru Gobind Singh Ji’s young sons, Baba Zorawar Singh and Baba Fateh Singh, who were bricked alive in 1705 by the Mughal governor Wazir Khan for refusing to convert to Islam. It also illustrates the valor of Guru Gobind Singh Ji’s elder sons, Baba Ajit Singh and Baba Jujhar Singh, who fought courageously in the Battle of Chamkaur in 1704, sacrificing their lives against the Mughal army.
Additionally, the lithograph honors the Forty Mukte (liberated ones), the devoted Sikhs who fought and sacrificed their lives in the Battle of Muktsar in 1705, defending Guru Gobind Singh Ji.
