Shahjehan (1946) is a classic Indian Hindi-language historical drama directed and produced by Abdul Rashid Kardar, with a screenplay written by Kamal Amrohi. The film features K. L. Saigal in the role of Sohail, Ragini as Ruhi, and Rehman in one of his earliest roles as Emperor Shahjehan. The supporting cast includes Nasreen as Mumtaz Mahal and P. Jairaj as Shiraz, contributing to a compelling ensemble.

Set during the reign of Emperor Shahjehan, the film tells a fictionalized tale centered on Ruhi, a woman of extraordinary beauty whose suitors engage in fatal conflicts, resulting in tragic losses. Her father, seeking justice, appeals to the emperor. In response, Shahjehan declares that Ruhi shall marry the man who can create a work of unmatched beauty. This royal challenge leads to a poignant story of love, creativity, and sacrifice—eventually culminating in the inspiration for the Taj Mahal.

The film's music, composed by Naushad, is enriched by lyrics from Khumar Barabankvi and marks the debut of the renowned poet Majrooh Sultanpuri as a film lyricist. The soundtrack includes timeless songs rendered by K. L. Saigal, such as “Jab Dil Hi Toot Gaya,” “Gham Diye Mustaqil,” and “Kar Lijiye Chal Kar.” Among these, “Jab Dil Hi Toot Gaya” remains one of Saigal’s most iconic performances, further enhancing the film’s emotional and artistic legacy.
