Sheesh Mahal (1950) is a Hindi-language social drama directed and produced by Sohrab Modi under the Minerva Movietone banner. The film stars Sohrab Modi as Thakur Jaspal Singh, Naseem Banu as Ranjana, Pushpa Hans as Nalini, Mubarak as Durgaprasad, Nigar Sultana as Roopa Devi, and Pran as Sundermukh.
The story follows Thakur Jaspal Singh, an aristocrat who refuses to accept his family's financial decline. Despite mounting debts, he continues his extravagant lifestyle until he is forced to sell their grand mansion, Sheesh Mahal, to Durgaprasad, a former laborer-turned-wealthy businessman. As the family struggles in their modest new life, they face numerous hardships—Jaspal Singh’s son Balram loses a leg in an accident, and his daughter Ranjana is forced to work as a maid in their former home. The film explores themes of pride, social change, and the difficulties of adapting to a transformed world in post-independence India.
The film’s music, composed by Vasant Desai, features lyrics by Aajiz, Shams Lucknowi, and Nazim Panipati, with songs performed by Shamshad Begum, Geeta Dutt, Pushpa Hans, and Mohammed Rafi. Notable tracks include "Muqaddar Ke Hathon," "Husnwalon Ki Galiyon Mein," and "Aayi Hai Deewali Sakhi Aayi Sakhi Aayi".
