TWA was established in 1930 through the merger of Transcontinental Air Transport and Western Air Express. In 1934, aviation pioneer Howard Hughes became a major investor, playing a key role in expanding the airline’s fleet with 18 Boeing aircraft and 30 Convair 880s. Despite its growth, financial struggles led TWA to declare bankruptcy in 1960.

TWA had a limited presence in India, operating exclusively in Bombay (now Mumbai) from January 8, 1947, until March 1975.
