Mahadev Vishwanath Dhurandhar (1867–1944) was a prominent Indian painter and illustrator known for his academic and mythological artwork. He studied at the Sir J.J. School of Art in Bombay, where he later became a teacher and served as headmaster in 1910. Dhurandhar’s work often combined Western techniques with Indian themes, depicting scenes of Indian daily life, folklore, and significant historical events. His versatile approach produced portraits, mythological illustrations, and social scenes widely reproduced in popular magazines, postcards, and advertisements. His style was shaped by his academic training, and his contributions extended to educational art through his role at Sir J.J. School of Art, where he influenced generations of Indian artists. Surya is shown on a chariot pulled by seven white horses, flanked by two female figures with chowries. The chariot, representing the seven days of the week, is intricately carved, with Sunlight Soap bars in the foreground and a radiant sun symbolizing purity. Lever Brothers introduced Sunlight Soap in India in 1888 and later expanded its portfolio with brands like Lifebuoy, Lux, and Dalda. They established Hindustan Vanaspati in 1931, followed by Lever Brothers in 1933, which later merged to form Hindustan Unilever in 1956.
