Fred Grayson Sayre
Fred Grayson Sayre (1879–1939) was one of California’s best landscape painters in oil and watercolor, born in Medoc, Missouri. He received his art training under portraitist J. Laurie Wallace in Omaha, Nebraska. He worked as a miner in lead and zinc mines before pursuing art. His first art job was in Houston, Texas, and he later moved to Chicago. He earned distinction as an illustrator and was a member of the Palette and Chisel Club. In 1916, he traveled by train through the Southwest, captivated by the desert landscape. He lived and painted in Arizona from 1919 to 1922, working as a bookkeeper for a mining company. He returned to California in 1922 and held his first exhibition there. He was a charter member of the Painter and Sculptor Club in Los Angeles and served as its president in 1929.
