The poster, titled "Scotch Fun in the Olden Times," depicts a humorous scene of Scottish men in kilts participating in a tightrope contest. The illustration shows the men at various stages of success and failure, with some falling onto the ground, which is scattered with spikes. The scene is surrounded by onlookers, adding to the playful and exaggerated nature of the poster. A prize is indicated at the end of the rope, seemingly a bottle of White Horse Whisky, with Caledonian men performing rope stunts to win it.
Founded in 1801, Mackie & Company established the Lagavulin Distillery on Islay and introduced White Horse Whisky in Edinburgh in 1861. In the 1920s, the company expanded into India, appointing Devereux & Co. Ltd. as sole agents for the Bombay Presidency and eastern regions, Murray & Co. Ltd. for the northern provinces, and Spencer & Co. Ltd. for the Madras Presidency.
