Zeenat (1945) is a notable Indian Muslim social melodrama directed by Syed Shaukat Hussain Rizvi, featuring Noor Jehan, Yakub, Karan Dewan, and Himalayawala in pivotal roles. The film's narrative centers on Zeenat (Noor Jehan), a young bride whose husband, Sharafat Hussain (Majeed), tragically dies shortly after their wedding. Facing societal scorn upon discovering her pregnancy, Zeenat is cast out by her in-laws. The story unfolds as she leaves her newborn daughter at her husband's grave and attempts suicide, only to be drawn back by the infant's cries. Unbeknownst to Zeenat, her brother-in-law, Liyaqat Hussain (Yakub), finds and raises the child, leading to a poignant reunion years later.
The film's music, composed by Meer Saheb and Hafiz Khan, features the groundbreaking all-female qawwali "Aahen Na Bharin Shikwe Na Kiye," performed by Zohrabai Ambalewali, Noor Jehan, and Kalyani. This song remains a significant contribution to Indian cinema's musical heritage. Zeenat achieved remarkable commercial success, becoming the highest-grossing Indian film of 1945, and is remembered for its compelling exploration of themes like love, sacrifice, and societal norms.
